October 31, 2008 - Health Education Workshop Teaches Families about Healthy Living

Forty-five parents, children and teachers attended a health education workshop 5 Fellows from UNC Schools of Medicine and Dentistry held on October 14 at Learning Together. Learning Together is a non-profit organization in Raleigh dedicated to providing innovative and culturally diverse learning experiences and supports for children with disabilities, children who are typically developing, and their families.

The event focused on three important aspects of a healthy lifestyle:

•In the Stress Management and Relaxation session, participants learned basic breathing and stretching exercises to cope with stress and anxiety.

•The Eating Healthy on a Budget session reviewed general nutrition guidelines, discussed ways to make the most of your food dollars, and talked about ideas to encourage children to make healthy food choices.

•The Taking Care of your Teeth session explored the relationship between oral health and overall health, healthy eating, normal tooth eruption patterns and how to help brush children’s teeth. It also included demonstrations of proper brushing techniques.

At the end of the evening, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and the opportunity to further discuss the workshop topics.

The symposium team included UNC Medical Fellows Kerry Colby, Courteney MacKuen, and Amy Marietta and UNC Dental Fellows Nurica Good and Avni Patel.
