July 14, 2008 - Being the Change You Want to See: A Guide for Pre-Med Students
“Being the Change You Want to See: A Guide for Pre-Med Students” was hosted by seven NC Fellows on July 12, 2008 for students enrolled in the Summer Medical Dental Enrichment program (SMDEP) at Duke School of Medicine. SMDEP has 80 participants from 27 states and 55 schools who self identify as underserved or under-represented minorities interested in applying for medical school. The symposium offered these students small group workshops about the primary and secondary application processes, MCAT preparation, dual degree programs, post graduate planning and clinical skills training. The primary objective is to increase the number of caring, culturally competent and capable physicians who are willing to dedicate their careers to addressing health disparities. The keynote speaker Dr. Julius Wilder, MD, PhD introduced this theme, and delivered a speech about the importance of a life of service. Students rotated through the workshops, learned about the application process, networked with medical students and staff, and received a booklet summarizing the discussed materials. The symposium team included Duke School of Medicine Fellows Emias Abebe, Moira Breslin, Michael Raisch, Genevieve Ricart, Loren Robinson, Jennifer Waddy and UNC School of Medicine Fellow Chris Dibble.
