November 08, 2007 - 150 Students Receive Passport to Health

Passport to Health was a month-long event for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Lakewood Elementary School in Durham. The program kicked off November 8th with interactive lessons focused on nutrition, exercise, and oral health. The children were challenged to eat fruits and vegetables, exercise, and brush and floss on a daily basis.  Parents signed the child’s “passport” next to each accomplished health goal. Each participant received a t-shirt, jump rope, water bottle, toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. Almost 75% of the students fully completed their passport.

On December 7th, soccer balls, basketballs and other sports equipment were raffled off and six Grand-Prize Winners received a bicycle and helmet. The Fellows believe that the event will have both an immediate and long term impact in the Durham community by teaching students and their families about simple, important principles of health and fitness.
